Australians, do you want to make a ton of money in an industry
that can be rewarding, fulfilling and meaningful? Then you might want to
consider becoming an Audiologist. What is an Audiologist? An Audiologist is an
individual who assists patients in addressing their hearing problems and
concerns. As an Audiologist you may be trained to diagnose hearing problems or
you might be a researcher finding new technologies to diagnose clients who
suffer from hearing loss. By becoming an Audiologist, you get the opportunity
to help people from a variety of backgrounds and demographics. In addition,
there are millions of people who suffer from some type of affliction that
effects their ability to hear and you could greatly impact the world in a
positive manner.
So what does the Audiologist profession entail? As an Audiologist you will work
to find out why some people suffer from hearing loss by running various tests,
initiating interviews with the client and facilitating diagnostic tests and
screenings to assist in obtaining answers regarding their hearing loss. There
are so many reasons why someone could be suffering from this condition, so it
will be imperative that the Audiologist is well trained and educated. An
Audiologist will also need to come up with a treatment plan so that there is a
course of action that will hopefully result in the client being able to address
their hearing concerns effectively. This treatment plan may need to be altered
or revised in order to effectively treat the client. Additionally, an
Audiologist may be responsible for assisting the client in getting implants
inserted and providing hearing aids. Furthermore, an Audiologist will need to
be familiar with the type of medical equipment to use in order to address the
needs of the client. Devices such as an audiometer will be used to determine
what sounds a client detects during screening. An Audiologist will also need to
be organized and keep good records so that a client's evaluations and
performance charts are dutifully monitored in a fashion that allows a client to
get clear and accurate feedback. As an Audiologist you will also need to work
with private insurance companies, state insurance companies (including Medicare
and Medicaid) to ensure that payment will be made and that services will be
approved.
In order to become an Audiologist, you will need an extensive background in the
fields of math and science. Expect to obtain a Master's degree in Speech
Pathology or a Master's of Science in Audiology. A background in sign language,
phonetics, linguistics and psychology may also be necessary in order to pursue
this field. As you can see, this field takes a lot of work and effort in order
to tap into this lucrative discipline. It's imperative that the school you
decide to attend is accredited and reputable. Also bear in mind, that certain
states will also require you to have a Doctor of Audiology degree to practice.
You will also need to acquire a state license and if you need to obtain a
doctorate, you will have to be certified in clinical competence in Audiology
from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. As you can see, the
field of Audiology can be very rewarding and profitable, if you are willing to
endure the years of education and training that is necessary to succeed. The
average Audiologist salary in Australia is around 68,000 per year.
